Representative Bernard Blue Benson Commits to Supreme Court Ruling, Urges Colleagues to Uphold Constitution

Representative Bernard Blue Benson of Electoral District #17, Montserrado County, has publicly pledged his commitment to abide by a recent Supreme Court ruling, citing his constitutional duty as a lawmaker and reaffirming his oath taken in January 2024 to uphold the Liberian Constitution.
In a statement posted on Facebook, Representative Benson referenced Article 66 of the 1986 Constitution of Liberia, which affirms the Supreme Court as the final arbiter of constitutional matters and the highest appellate authority in the nation.
“With the April 23, 2025 ruling of the Supreme Court and in keeping with my vow to God, I will sit under the gavel of Speaker Jonathan Fonati Koffa when the session of the 55th National Legislature reconvenes per the mandate of the Supreme Court,” Benson declared.
The representative did not elaborate on the specifics of the ruling but emphasized the need for all lawmakers to respect the decision of the court, describing it as a constitutional obligation.
“We as lawmakers took a vow to uphold and protect the Constitution,” he stated. “So I encourage my colleagues to join me in respecting the Supreme Court’s opinion with regard to Article 66.”
His remarks come amid ongoing legal and political debates surrounding legislative procedures and authority within the National Legislature. Hon. Benson’s public reaffirmation of his constitutional responsibilities suggests a move toward reinforcing rule of law and institutional order.
“May God bless us all,” he concluded.
