Rep. Bernard Blue Benson Calls for Immediate Action Following Fatal Shooting by Liberian National Police

In response to the recent tragic killing of a citizen by an officer of the Liberian National Police in Banjor Community, Lower Virginia, Representative Bernard Blue Benson of District 17 – Montserrado County, has issued a public call for immediate action and thorough investigation.

“I am deeply shocked and saddened by the news of another gruesome killing in my constituency,” said Rep. Benson. “After a long day of national engagement, my office received reports that a citizen had been fatally shot by an officer of the Liberian National Police in Banjor Community. This marks the second such incident in less than a year in the same area, and it is absolutely unacceptable.”

Rep. Benson condemned the actions of the police officer in the strongest terms, calling attention to the growing concern over the professionalism and conduct of law enforcement officers. “This tragic loss of life is not only a breach of trust between the people and the police but also raises serious questions about the standards of professionalism, ethics, discipline, and training within the Liberian National Police,” he stated.

The recent incident has further highlighted pressing concerns about the vetting and training processes for police officers, especially those entrusted with firearms. Rep. Benson is calling for an immediate review of the criteria and procedures followed before weapons are issued to officers, as well as the cognitive and psychological evaluations applied before arming individuals in law enforcement.

“As a matter of urgency, I will seek the indulgence of Plenary to invite the Liberian National Police to appear and provide clear answers to these vital questions,” Rep. Benson explained. “The safety and security of the people of District 17 and all Liberians must remain a top priority, and we must ensure that those entrusted with power and weapons uphold the highest standards of professionalism.”

Rep. Benson also called on the people of District 17 to remain calm as the investigation progresses and pledged his commitment to seeing the matter through. “I extend my deepest condolences to the victim’s family and the community. Today, I will visit the community to offer my support. Please be assured that I will not rest until this matter is resolved in accordance with the rule of law,” he concluded.
