Liberia Officially Establishes National Tourism Authority as President Signs Bill into Law

Liberia has officially established the National Tourism Authority following the signing of the landmark bill into law by the President, marking a significant step toward revitalizing the country’s tourism sector. The legislation, introduced by Montserrado County District 17 Representative Hon. Bernard Benson Jr., is now fully enacted after receiving final executive approval.

In a celebratory statement, Rep. Benson declared, “Our bill is now LAW. Grateful to all those that made this possible.” The announcement was met with enthusiasm across various sectors, particularly among stakeholders in tourism, culture, and economic development.

The new law separates the tourism portfolio from the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs, and Tourism (MICAT), creating a dedicated institution focused solely on promoting and developing Liberia’s tourism industry. The National Tourism Authority will now be responsible for attracting international investment, creating job opportunities, and positioning Liberia as a viable and attractive destination on the global stage.

Ambassador for Tourism Christopher Hayes Onanuga, a vocal supporter of the bill, was also acknowledged in Benson’s statement. “We’ve done our part,” Benson added, signaling a new legislative focus: “On to the next bill… We must open this country for development.”

The passage of the law has been widely praised as a critical step in unlocking Liberia’s untapped tourism potential. With the legal framework now in place, attention shifts to the implementation phase and the appointment of leadership to steer the newly formed National Tourism Authority.

Observers say the move could usher in a new era of cultural appreciation, environmental preservation, and economic opportunity across Liberia’s diverse landscapes and heritage sites.
