In a landmark move aimed at strengthening historical and cultural ties between Liberia and the African American community, Representative Bernard Blue Benson of Montserrado County District #17 has introduced a groundbreaking bill seeking to grant eligible Black Americans honorary Liberian citizenship.

Titled “An Act To Grant Eligible Black Americans Honorary Citizenship of Liberia,” the proposed legislation was formally submitted to the Plenary of the House of Representatives on Thursday, June 5, during its 8th Day Sitting of the 2nd Quarter, 2nd Session of the 55th Legislature.

The bill has been forwarded to the House Committees on Internal Affairs and Judiciary for detailed review and recommendation within two weeks.

Rep. Benson emphasized the economic significance of the proposed legislation, particularly its potential to boost Liberia’s tourism and investment landscape.

“This bill, if passed, will be an economic game changer for our country, with the possibility of attracting billions of dollars into our economy—especially in the tourism sector,” Rep. Benson stated.

The initiative seeks to acknowledge the deep historical connection between Liberia and the African American community while creating new opportunities for economic and cultural exchange.

The proposed law is now under committee review, with national attention focused on its potential to redefine Liberia’s engagement with the global African diaspora.
